Orthodontics for Children

Smiles That Grow With Your Child

Early orthodontic treatment for children is one of the most impactful investments you can make in your child’s lifelong health, confidence, and smile. Our all-female team of orthodontists, who are also moms living right here in our community, make every visit feel welcoming, calm, and worth looking forward to. In the Valley Orthodontics offers specialized orthodontics for children that is gentle, effective, and tailored to growing smiles across the Pioneer Valley.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Starting early doesn’t always mean starting treatment right away; it means giving your child’s smile the best possible foundation before problems have a chance to grow.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Most parents assume orthodontics doesn’t come into the picture until the teenage years. But identifying developing issues while your child is still growing, typically between ages 7 and 10 gives us the most flexibility to guide jaw development and prevent more complex treatment down the road.

If you notice any of the following signs, it’s a good time to schedule a complimentary consultation. You don’t need a referral from your dentist; just give us a call.

Crowded or Crooked Teeth

Overlapping or rotated teeth often indicate there isn't enough space in the jaw for adult teeth to come in properly.

Difficulty Chewing or Biting

If your child avoids certain foods or seems uncomfortable eating, this can be a sign of a bite alignment issue worth evaluating.

Mouth Breathing

Chronic mouth breathing can signal airway concerns or jaw alignment issues that are easier to address during active growth phases.

Thumb or Finger Sucking

Prolonged habits like thumb sucking can shift tooth alignment and affect jaw development over time.

Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth

Losing baby teeth too early or holding onto them too long can create spacing and alignment challenges for permanent teeth.

Crossbite, Overbite, or Underbite

Bite misalignments are much easier to correct when the jaw is still developing. Waiting can mean more complex treatment later.

Not sure? That’s completely okay. Our team is here to answer your questions, and a consultation doesn’t commit you to anything. Many families leave simply with a “watch and wait” plan and peace of mind that their child is on the right track. We’ll always give you our honest assessment.

Phase I — Early Interceptive Treatment

For younger children (typically ages 7–10), Phase I focuses on guiding jaw growth, correcting bite issues, and creating space for adult teeth. This phase often involves growth appliances or expanders, not necessarily full braces.

Phase II — Comprehensive Braces

Once most permanent teeth have erupted, Phase II uses braces or aligners to align the full smile and coordinate the bite. For many children, early Phase I treatment makes Phase II shorter and more straightforward.

Metal Braces for Kids

Time-tested and more comfortable than ever, metal braces are highly effective for even complex cases. Kids can personalize their look with colorful elastic bands, a detail our young patients love.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces blend with your child’s natural teeth for a more subtle appearance, while delivering the same comprehensive results as metal braces. A popular choice for older children who prefer a less noticeable look.

Invisalign for Kids & Teens

For eligible patients, Invisalign clear aligners offer a removable, discreet alternative to traditional braces. Kids can eat freely, brush normally, and feel confident throughout treatment — with compliance indicators built right in for teen patients.

Retainers & Post-Treatment Care

Custom retainers protect everything your child worked for. After treatment, retainers help teeth stay in their new positions while the jaw and surrounding tissues fully settle, and we’ll guide your family through exactly how to use and care for them.

Not Sure Where Your Child Stands?

A complimentary consultation is the best place to start. Our doctors will review your child’s development, answer every question you have, and only recommend treatment if it’s genuinely needed.
