Orthodontic Benefits For Kids

Early Guidance

Guiding jaw growth while kids’ bones are still developing helps shape the jaw for better long-term alignment and function.

Prevent Bigger Problems

Early care can address issues like crowding or crossbites before they become bigger, more complex problems.

Support Tooth Eruption

Creating space for adult teeth to come in properly reduces the risk of impaction or needing teeth pulled later on.

Build Habits

Starting care young helps kids feel comfortable with orthodontics and encourages a lifelong routine of good oral health.

Orthodontic Issues To Monitor In Kids

Thumb Sucking

Thumb or finger sucking can affect tooth alignment and jaw development.

Mouth Breathing

Mouth breathing could signal airway and/or jaw alignment concerns.

Crooked Teeth

Overlapping, crowded, crooked teeth may indicate insufficient mouth space.

Tooth Loss Timing

Losing baby teeth too early or too late can impact the timing of adult teeth.

Jaw Pain

Pain or clicking in the jaw may suggest problems with alignment or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Grinding or Clenching

Teeth grinding or clenching can lead to damage and may indicate alignment issues.

Early orthodontic intervention can make a big difference in your child’s dental health and development. By the age of 7, when most kids still have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, our doctors can identify potential problems like bite issues or jaw misalignment and might suggest splitting treatment into two phases. Early treatment (Phase I) doesn’t always mean braces—sometimes it’s about guiding growth to avoid more serious problems later. It may involve appliances or simple monitoring. If you notice signs like difficulty chewing, mouth breathing, or crooked teeth, it’s a good time to schedule a consultation. Early intervention helps set the stage for a healthier, more confident smile as your child grows.
If needed, we usually recommend Phase I of orthodontic treatment for younger kids, around age 7 or 8, when their teeth and jaws are still developing. During this phase, the goal is to guide jaw growth, address any bite issues, and create enough space for adult teeth to come in properly. It often involves using appliances like expanders or retainers, but it doesn’t mean your child will get braces just yet! Early intervention helps prevent more serious problems later on, setting your child up for a smoother transition to Phase II when they’re older.
Phase II happens when most or all of their permanent teeth have come in. During phase II, we use braces or other appliances to continue to coordinate the bite and align the teeth.
