When Should My Child Get Braces?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, even if braces aren’t needed yet. At this age, our doctors can already see how your child’s jaw is developing and permanent teeth are coming in, which means we can catch spacing, bite, and alignment issues while there’s still room to guide growth naturally.

That doesn’t mean every 7-year-old walks out with braces that day. Many children are simply monitored with periodic check-ins until the timing is right, typically once most baby teeth have given way to adult teeth, somewhere between ages 9 and 14. A few signs it may be time to schedule a consultation sooner:

  • Crowded, overlapping, or crooked teeth
  • Noticeable overbite, underbite, or crossbite
  • Difficulty biting, chewing, or speaking clearly
  • Baby teeth lost unusually early or held on unusually long
  • Thumb-sucking, mouth breathing, or jaws that appear out of proportion to the face

Not sure if your child fits the pattern? That’s exactly what a complimentary consultation is for. There’s no referral required and no obligation, just an honest, doctor-led evaluation of where your child stands.

Types of Braces We Offer for Children

Traditional Metal Braces

Metal braces remain one of the most effective, dependable ways to move teeth, especially for children with more complex spacing or bite issues that need precise control. Today's brackets are smaller, smoother, and more comfortable than the braces many parents remember, and kids love choosing colorful elastic bands to make their braces their own. Metal braces are also typically the most budget-friendly option, which matters to a lot of families.

Clear Ceramic Braces

For older children and tweens who want the same reliable results with a more subtle look, clear ceramic braces blend in with natural tooth color while still delivering full, comprehensive correction. They do call for a bit of extra care around staining, but for many kids, the confidence boost of a less noticeable appliance is well worth it.

Not Sure Which Is Right for Your Child?

Some children are also candidates for Invisalign First or Invisalign Teen, a removable, nearly invisible alternative to traditional braces. During your child's consultation, our doctors will walk you through exactly which option best fits their case, their age, and their personality, so you can decide together as a family.

What to Expect: Your Child's Braces Journey

Every child’s timeline looks a little different, but most families move through the same general path:

  • Complimentary Consultation: Our doctors evaluate your child’s teeth, jaw, and bite, and answer every question you have, no pressure, no sales pitch.
  • Phase I (if needed): For younger children, ages roughly 7–10, Phase I uses expanders or growth appliances (not always full braces) to guide jaw development and create room for adult teeth.
  • Phase II (Comprehensive Braces): Once most permanent teeth have erupted, braces go on to align the full smile and coordinate the bite. Children who complete Phase I often move through Phase II faster and more simply.
  • Regular Adjustments: Appointments every 4–6 weeks keep treatment on track. A doctor sees your child at every single visit; we don’t hand adjustments off to rotating staff.
  • Debonding & Retainers: Once treatment is complete, custom retainers protect your child’s new smile while the bite and jaw fully settle into place.

Life With Braces: Food, School, and Sports

A few adjustments make braces easy to live with day to day:

  • Food: Soft foods are best for the first few days. After that, we’ll flag anything extra-sticky, hard, or crunchy that’s worth avoiding to protect brackets and wires.
  • School & Activities: Braces don’t sideline kids from band, choir, or sports. Musicians and athletes may need a short adjustment period, and we always recommend a mouthguard for contact sports.
  • Hygiene: Brushing after meals and daily flossing (interdental brushes or a water flosser make it easier) keep teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.
  • Minor Irritation: Some soreness after adjustments is normal. Orthodontic wax and over-the-counter relief keep kids comfortable, and it fades quickly.
  • We’re Here Between Visits: A loose bracket or poking wire isn’t an emergency to panic over; our dedicated emergency line means a real person is just a call away.

How Long Do Kids Wear Braces?

Treatment length depends on your child’s individual case, but as a general guide, Phase I typically runs 6–12 months, and full Phase II treatment averages 18–24 months. Starting with Phase I when it’s genuinely needed often makes Phase II shorter and more straightforward, one more reason an early evaluation is worth it, even if treatment doesn’t start right away.

The Benefits of Braces for Children

Straightening your child’s teeth early does more than create a great smile; it supports lifelong oral health and confidence:

  • Guides healthy jaw growth while your child is still developing
  • Creates space for crowded or crooked adult teeth
  • Corrects bite issues before they become harder (and more expensive) to fix later
  • Makes brushing and flossing easier, reducing cavity and gum disease risk
  • Can shorten or simplify future orthodontic treatment
  • Builds confidence during formative school years

FAQs About Braces for Children

Don’t see what you need here? Give us a call. We’d be happy to answer any question you have.

There’s no single age that fits every child. The AAO recommends a first evaluation by age 7 so we can monitor development, but most kids don’t actually get braces until more permanent teeth have come in, typically between ages 9 and 14. Every case is different, which is exactly why we start with a consultation, not an assumption.

It comes down to what’s happening with jaw growth and tooth eruption. If we spot a developing bite or spacing issue while your child is still growing, early Phase I appliances (not always braces) can guide that growth. If everything looks on track, we’ll simply monitor and move straight to braces once the timing is right.

Both are highly effective. Metal braces are durable, versatile, and typically more budget-friendly, a great fit for complex cases. Ceramic braces blend in more with natural teeth, which some older children and tweens prefer. We’ll talk through your child’s case, age, and preferences to help you decide together.
Most kids feel mild pressure or soreness for a few days after braces go on or get adjusted; that’s just teeth shifting, and it passes quickly with wax or over-the-counter relief. Braces don’t stop kids from playing instruments or sports; we simply recommend a mouthguard for contact sports and give a short adjustment window for band or choir.
Typically, every 4–6 weeks for adjustments. We keep appointments efficient so school and activities stay on schedule, and a doctor sees your child at every single visit, not just a rotating technician.
Many dental insurance plans include an orthodontic benefit for kids. Our team verifies your coverage during the consultation and helps you understand your options, including flexible financing, so cost never has to be a guessing game.
